My name is Mahtab Khan and I am a Progressive Democrat running for District Leader in NY Assembly District 24.
I graduated as an Honors Student from CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice with a Dual Degree in
Political Science (BA) and Criminal Justice (BS) with Double Minors in Law and Human Rights.
During my college career, I was the Senior Class Representative for the Class of 2019 and served as the University Student Senate Delegate for John Jay College. I was also the President and founder of the UNICEF Club and the President of the National Honors Society, Phi Eta Sigma. For Model UN, I was the Delegate for the Conference of the Parties Committee which was in charge of addressing climate change and advocating for the Paris Agreement. These experiences helped me to become a stronger student activist. In college, I was also able to express one of my favorite hobbies as a Photographer for the Yearbook Committee. In the New York Model Senate Program, I served as the Model Senator for District 13, which is represented by Senator Jessica Ramos. This experience led me to be able to attend the SOMOS Conference where I was able to network more student leaders and activists as well as elected officials. It even led me to my SOMOS Internship working at Senator Jessica Ramos' office during the Summer of 2019. This was where I was able to help suggest ideas for legislation and connect the office with other organizations as well as religious institutions to help build our community in Senatorial District 13.
I had the honor to become a Delegate for my role model Senator Bernie Sanders in his run for President of the United States of America. As a Delegate, I was able to volunteer my time petitioning and canvassing for Senator Sanders. It even inspired me to run for District Leader myself because I knew that 2020 would be the year for change and for us to finally move progressively away from the status quo. One of the main reasons why I decided to run for District Leader is because
One of the other reasons why I decided to run was because we had little to no representation of the South Asian and Muslim Communities here in New York whether it be in the City Council, Assembly, Senate or Congress. The same goes for our District Leaders here in New York.
